President's Welcome

On behalf of the Bexar County Women's Bar Association and Foundation ("BCWBA"), I would like to welcome you to our web site. For those of you who are not members of the BCWBA, I hope that the information you find here will motivate you to want to become a member. If you are already a member of our organization, you are aware of the many fine contributions this organization has made to the community and the women's bar in Bexar County. So, for those of you who are members, I hope that you will find our web site to be a quick, readily available source of information on our various committees and activities that take place throughout the year.

The Bexar County Women's Bar Foundation Bench Brunch is our signature event. This year, the Bench Brunch will be October 21, 2007 at the Sky Room at Incarnate Word University. Please check out our section on the Bench Brunch over the next few weeks to find out how you can join in the fun of planning this event. Our co-chairs, Monica Trollinger (monica.trollinger@swri.org) and Christine Reinhard (creinhard@akingump.com) would love to have you join in on the planning.

Although the Bench Brunch is a large endeavor on our part each year, because we are women, the ultimate multi-taskers, we are able to find time to devote to our many other worthwhile endeavors. One of those endeavors is the GALS' Program. BCWBA is preparing to implement the GALS program at the Cyndi Krier Juvenile Detention Center. The purpose of the GALS program is to bring professional women into group monitoring experiences with groups of middle school girls. Through these sessions, the volunteers help the girls develop new relations and to build assets that will reinforce self esteem, leadership skills and healthy choices. We are very excited to be able to bring this program to the Detention Center. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Michelle Weekley at Ruttan03@sbcglobal.net.

Our membership is also very involved in mentoring women law students at St. Mary's University Law School. Even if you believe that you do not have the time to actually act as a mentor, please join us at our various mentoring events throughout the year. Our next two events are the Luncheon at St. Mary's on January 19, and a happy hour in March.

We are also preparing for our Law Day Poster Contest and Luncheon for students at Fox Tech High School. The luncheon provides BCWBA members and our local judiciary an opportunity to visit with the women students from Fox Tech High School who are interested in pursuing a career in law or law enforcement. For many of these students, this is their first opportunity to talk to an attorney about what it is like to be an attorney or a judge. This event is scheduled for April, so watch for announcements about the date and location on this web page and in the Equal Times.

Also planned for this Spring and Summer are the President's Party in March, the Julian Gold Style Show in April, the Retreat in May, the CLE Cooking Class at Central Market and the Family Night at the Missions both in June. So, there are plenty of events coming up that you will not want to miss. We hope that you will be able to attend one or all of these events. If you need more information about any of these events, please contact the event chair listed in the Equal Times. If you need membership information, please contact Katherine Patton at kpatton@coxsmith.com.

Sincerely,

Carol E. Jendrzey
