UpdateThe Bexar County Women’s Bar Association has extended its support to an important community project led by the University of Texas Health Science Center Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Sex Education Program is in its second year in Bexar County and is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds. The Worth the Wait® Curriculum is being used in 7 school districts in Bexar County, and has expanded outside Bexar County for use in Atascosa and Kendall County school districts. In addition, the curriculum is being used in the San Antonio Archdiocese as well as several private and charter schools. On over forty middle and high school campuses across the San Antonio area, the Sex Education Program is impacting adolescents and adults in a positive way. The Sex Education Program, using the Worth the Wait® curriculum, teaches students and adults the social, legal, emotional and socioeconomic consequences of adolescent sexual activity. The Bexar County Women’s Bar Association has provided generous support to the Sex Education Program over the past two years. BCWBA members have volunteered their time to lecture at the teacher trainings, educating teachers on the legal issues associated with early sexual activity. In addition, the committee chair has hosted several events supporting the Sex Education Program. An informational meeting was held last year for attorneys interested in volunteering or simply in finding out more about the program. Future meetings will be announced. The community support for the UTHSCSA Sex Education Program has been outstanding. This year, the Sex Education Program was able to implement an arts contest for students receiving the curriculum. Thanks to generous donations from supporters, cash prizes will be awarded to winners and a recognition ceremony will be held for all participants. Additional efforts to impact the community have manifested in the development of an Adult Advisory Board. Comprised of various members of the community, including educators, lawyers, and business people, the Adult Advisory Board will provide unique perspective, encouragement and direction for the Sex Education Program as it continues to look towards the future and further impact our young people and our community. The UTHSCSA Sex Education Program is grateful for the BCWBA’s support. |
