Information about the Clinic:
The 1102 Guardianship Assistance Clinic leverages section 1102 of the Texas Estate Code to help families who otherwise could not afford the cost (on average $5,000-$10,000 in Bexar County) obtain Guardianship of the Person over their loved one. This clinic assists members of Morgan’s Multi-Assistance Center (MAC) who need to obtain guardianship over their loved one with a disability who meets the legal definition of incapacity.
Why volunteer at this clinic?
Low commitment, high impact!
Your commitment of 1 hour for training and 3 hours on site makes guardianship possible for a family who would otherwise not be able to afford it. This allows families to keep their loved ones safe from fraud and other crimes, while making the necessary medical and living decisions to keep them safe, healthy, and thriving.
One time commitment, no follow up work
This is a limited scope clinic, you will draft three documents (1102 information letter, a guardianship application fillable template, and an affidavit of inability to pay) and be finished. There is no follow up work or commitment once the clinic ends.
Training and mentors for peace of mind
The training is accessible on demand and less than 1 hour. There will be on site mentors certified in guardianship to answer questions and check all documents
Pre-vetted clients
All clients seen at this clinic are already members of Morgan’s Multi-Assistance Center (MAC) , a phenomenal community organization making a difference for the disability community. The clients have been referred by their MAC navigators, attended SALSA’s walk-in clinic and been vetted by a staff or volunteer attorney for this guardianship clinic. These are clients for which alternatives to guardianship are not an option.
Law student volunteers
There will be law student volunteers from St. Mary’s Law who can assist you with drafting and who you can mentor during your time at the clinic. WIN-WIN!
True collaboration
This clinic has the support of Morgan’s Multi-Assistance Center (MAC) and is run at their beautiful and inclusive facility. It is supported by MAC staff and on site partners.
